The plus sign should not be included in the problem. Since it is included, in the solutions guide it is also correct to say the expression is, "negative eight plus the opposite of negative forty-six." Section 3.2, problems 2-6. The abscissa (the x-coordinate) measures a horizontal distance. In the ordered pair (2,3), 2 is the abscissa. The ordinate (the y-coordinate) measures a vertical distance. Cross out "14 ft" above the right triangle DEF. Section 9.4, problems 16-20. Write the word "Solve" above problem 16. Section 9.5, problem 17. Solutions Guide, Section 1.2, page 7 problem 41. The value for "c" from the textbook is 7,038 and it was incorrectly reflected in the solutions guide as 48, 441. The total for a+b+c should be 56,010. Section 1.3, problem 76. The area should be 81 square feet. Chapter 1 Review Exercises, problem 29. The answer in the solutions guide should be 56. Section 2.1, problem 135. The answer to this problem does not appear in the Solutions Guide nor the Text. The answer is Student C. Here is why. We're told that both statements are false. When an "or" statement is false, both parts have to be false. So when Student A says it was either Student B or Student D, we know it can be neither of them. Student D said it was neither Student B nor Student C. In order for Student D to be lying it must be one of them. Since Student B was eliminated earlier, it must be Student C. Section 2.3, problem 41b. In the solutions guide the annual net income for Bradlees would be -\$93,920,000 rather than the -\$16,576,000 listed. Chapter 2 Test, problem 27. The correct answer is -11 rather than 11. Section 3.3, #147(b). In the solutions guide, "GM" should be replaced with "Ford" and the first two steps in the calculation are incorrect because the GM high is used in those steps. However, the answer is correct. Section 3.4, #160. In the solutions guide, the product of 21 and 13 should be 273 rather than 651. The solution is correct as printed. Section 4.1, #72. In the solutions guide, the diagram is off register a bit and should be justified just a bit to the right to point to the correct digits. Also, the decimal given is for the previous problem. The correct answer should be 2.97527. Chapter 4 Test, problem 7. The answer in the Solutions Guide is incorrect because the decimal point is in the wrong position. The correct answer is 6.697. Section 5.1, #50. The constant in the answer should be -2 rather than -1. Section 5.5, problem 20. In the solutions guide, the last term of the answer should be positive. Section 5.6, #55. The problem is written differently in the solutions guide. The correct answer is 1.6 x 1010. Section 5.6, #59. The problem is written differently in the solutions guide. The correct answer is 1 x 10-12. Chapter 6 Review, problem 24. In the Solutions Guide, in the first few steps the numbers used in the problem are not correct. The number 302 should be 322 and the number 28 should be 8. Section 7.5, #1. Part (a) is the only example of direct variation because k is not the coefficient of a variable in the others. Section 7.5, #2. Parts (a) and (c) represent "d varies directly as t" because they are of the form... d=kt with k=400 in part (a), and k=25 in part (c). Chapter 7, Cumulative Review, problem 16. In the solutions guide, the variable "y" is missing from the first term. Chapter 8, Review Exercises, problem 31. In the Solutions Manual, the calculation of the fraction of a year corresponding with 45 days uses 360 in the denominator and it should be 365 to reflect the information in Section 8.5. The resulting answer will be \$31.81. Section 9.1, problem 44. In the solutions guide, the measure of the angle in the final step should read 136 degrees rather than 138 degrees. Chapter 9 Review, #1. In the solutions guide, an angle "c" is used in the solution and there is no angle c labeled in the original figure. Angle c is the angle inside the triangle that is supplementary to angle a. Chapter 9 Test, problem 10. The answer in the solutions guide should be 135 square meters rather than 155 square meters. Section 10.2, problem 17. The numbers used to solve the problem in the solutions guide are not the same as the numbers given in the text. Please omit this problem. Section 10.3, problem 11. The solutions guide lists the number of favorable outcomes as 1 and the number should be 6. Chapter 10 Cumulative Review Exercises, problem 16. The solution in the solutions guide does not patch the question. Please omit the problem. Chapter 10 test, problem 3. The answer is calculated correctly at 16% but is written incorrectly as 18%. Prealgebra Corrections and Clarifications(2nd edition from Feb 2002) The last objective in each section is often entitled Applications and Formulas or just Applications. Limit the number of problems assigned in this sub-section to about 4 to 6 problems. Problems under Critical Thinking may be omitted as well as Projects in Mathematics. Is a graphing calculator needed for Prealgebra? No, the need for a graphing calculator at the Preagebra level is marginal. But if the student plans to attend college in the sciences we would recommend the TI-83 or TI-83 plus, because it will be needed in future math and physics courses. It is powerful, user friendly, and comes with an easy to navigate guidebook. Section 1.1, margin exercise #13. The 6 on the right side of the equation should be a 5. Section 1.5, problem 35. The trick in working problems 21-40 on page 60 is to re-write the number as the product of several factors. On all of these the same little factor is used over and over. To find the factor and to find out how many times it is used, try to divide some small numbers into the number given. if the division goes evenly, then you can re-write the number as a product of two other numbers. For #35, a little trial and error will reveal that 3 goes into 243 evenly and it goes 81 times; that means 243 can be written as 3 times 81. Then you look at the 81 factor to see if you can break it down by dividing by 3, and so on like this: 243 = 3 (81) 243 = 3 (3) (27) 243 = 3 (3) (3) (9) 243 = 3 (3) (3) (3) (3) 243 = 3^5 Section 4.6, problem 31. The answer in the back of the textbook (1 inch for the width; 2.5 inch for the length) is incorrect. The answer in the solutions guide (3 inch for the width; 7.5 inch for the length) is correct. Section 5.2, problem 25. Think of the number next to a letter as telling you how many of that letter you have; 5x means you have five x's, 0.03x means you have 0.03 x's, and when you have just x, well, you have one x. In 0.03x - x, you think of it as 0.03x - 1x and to bring them together you collect the numbers next to the x's, or (0.03-1)x, which is -0.97x. Section 5.3, problems 17, 19, and 21. In the solutions guide the multiplying factor is incorrect because a 1 is attached in the tens digit. Therefore, the answers to those problems are incorrect. The correct answers are 2.036, 0.002028, and 1.616202 respectively. Chapter 8, Chapter Test, problem 19. The problem is listed differently in the text and the solutions guide. The bottom polynomial should read 5x-4, and not 5x-4 + 2^2.
